Types of Burial of the Living with the Dead

Main stone room and annexed stone rooms

The main stone room of Jisanri Tumulus No. 44 is constructed as a long square shape having 9.4m of length, 1.75m of width, and 2.1m of height and is located at the center of grave found. Inside of the stone room is disturbed due to repeated grave robberies and human bones were found at the bottom near to the southeastern wall. South stone room was constructed parallel to main stone room apart from the north wall of the main stone room by 2.6m to the north. It has 5.1m of length, 1.3m of width, and 1.85m of height and human bones were found on the damaged bottom. West stone room was constructed vertical to the lengthwise direction of the main stone room apart from the north wall of main stone room by 1.3 meter. It has 5.7m of length, 1.7m of width, and 1.8m of height and is somewhat larger than south stone room; human bones in stretched shape were found on the bottom near to the wall. As the human bones excavated from each stone room are seriously corroded, the sexes and ages cannot accurately identified but the position of excavation indicates that each of the main stone room and the two annexed stone rooms would have the dead living buried with the dead. The dead living buried with the dead in the main stone room is expected to be the person that closely followed the main person of the tomb and the dead living buried with the dead in the two annexed stone rooms is expected to be the persons to manage the materials of the main person after his or her death.

Burial of 30’s male and female persons with the dead

Burial of 30’s male and female persons with the dead Stone Coffin No. 13 is constructed at the northwest of main stone room and has 184cm of length, 43cm of width, and 25cm of height. In the coffin, head bones were found just under the northeast wall and southwest wall; leg bones and hip bone were placed at 16cm from the northeast wall and another hip bone and finger bones were placed at 1m distance. In consideration of the situation at excavation, it is expected that two persons were buried with folding to reverse direction. When the human bones were analyzed, they were found to be the bones of an early 30’s male person and a late 30’s person and the two persons might be husband and wife.

Burial of 20’s female person with the dead

Burial of 20’s female person with the dead Stone Coffin No. 26 was constructed at the west of main stone room and has 187cm of length, 56~36cm of width, and 43~29cm of height. A head bone was found near to the north wall and a hip bone and leg bones were found at 100cm position. In consideration of the situation at excavation, the person is expected to be buried with placing the head at the north and with stretching the body and, as the result of analysis, the person was found to be a late 20’s female person.

Burial of 50’s male person with the dead

Burial of 50’s male person with the dead Stone Coffin No. 27 is constructed at the west of main stone room and has 205cm of length, 42cm of width, and 43cm of height. In terms of the construction method of the stone coffin, each long wall was constructed by standing 3-4 pieces of slabs of stone, each short wall was constructed by standing one piece of slab of stone, and rubble stones were stacked to 1~2 layers on each of the long walls. A stone head and teeth were dispersed near to the north wall and leg bones were placed near to south wall. In consideration of the situation at excavation, the person is expected to be buried with placing the head at the north and with stretching the body and, as the result of analysis, the person was found to be a early 50’s male person.

Burial of two 10’s female persons with the dead

Burial of two 10’s female persons with the dead Stone Coffin No. 21 is constructed at the north of main stone room and has 290cm of length, 53cm of width, and 49cm of height. Two persons’ head bones were found attached with the east wall and leg bones and finger bones were found at 70cm position. In consideration of the situation at excavation, two persons were expected to be buried with placing their heads at the east in stretched posture. When the human bones were analyzed, two persons were found to be around 10 years of female children.

Burial of a 30’s male person and an 8-year child (father and daughter) with the dead

Burial of a 30’s male person and an 8-year child (father and daughter) with the dead Stone Coffin No. 28 is constructed at the west of main stone room and has 224cm of length, 50cm of width, and 28cm of height. The head bone of an adult, leg bones, and toe bones were found attached with south wall. In consideration of the situation at excavation, two persons were expected to be buried with placing their heads at the southeast in stretched posture. When the human bones were analyzed, the two persons were found to be an early 30’s male person and an about 8 years old female child.
